Land of the Long Flat White

Coffee Culture in Aotearoa New Zealand

Brand new to town and with the locals watching and wondering what was being developed in the old beach front villa, this cafe is in one of the most prime locations in Dunedin.

With a full kitchen this cafe bar has a good mixture of seating catering from full dining through to the casual coffee drinker.

Bucking the trend for cafe interiors Swell is quite open with a teal white interior reflecting one would seem the ocean vistas from the huge front windows.

Orb coffee is on offer and as you come to expect from Orb coffee it doesn't dissapoint. The cups are larger than usual flat white (but thankfully not large). The coffee had a beautiful thick strong crema with a slightly bitter taste (which I like some don't). Resisting the trend, their coffees are still priced at $3:50 and the lunch menu isn't too pricey either. There is also a small snack cabinet from which I had a small bacon and egg pastry.

The wine menu is good and there is a full bar with Macs and Speights on tap. I could imagine the front deck on a summers day will be popular (it was 24C one hour before I went but 13C and pouring southerly by the time I arrived).

There are plenty of staff and service even at lunch time was very fast (particularly for the coffee which is nice).

If you've got some one from out of town and you want to show off the beauty of Dunedin while dining or sipping a nice full flat white, then I can reccomend Swell cafe and Bar.

Only downside and it's out of their control (sort of) the building is in a Vodafone 3G blacspot (literally meters away it's ok) and they don't offer free Wi-Fi, this would be a great spot to get some work done.

Well worth giving a go and ok dying to see what others think of the food and dinner service.

We went there recently for an evening meal. I thought they had given us the lunch menu by mistake, and asked for the correct menu. Alas, it was the evening menu! We abandoned our plans and went to "Two Chefs" in Lower Stuart st.
Very nice indeed!

Hey very interesting. The Lunch Menu is nice but nothing to really write home about, and considering I think Orb coffee has the weirdest after taste, I've only been back once, and again, it was ok.

Seems very popular, but I feel with that location and the sorts of crowds looking for somewhere to go for lunch there, you'd have to be serving pretty bad food for it to not do so well.

Will be interesting to see what will happen when the new place on the corner opens.

Cheers for the feedback.
